nyt-was-fit-to-printThanks to Lesekreis for the tip: The New York Times has opened its vaults and put its historic issues online:

“TimesMachine can take you back to any issue from Volume 1, Number 1 of The New-York Daily Times, on September 18, 1851, through The New York Times of December 30, 1922. Choose a date in history and flip electronically through the pages, displayed with their original look and feel.” Although you have to be a subscriber to the print edition to use the service, or go to a “local library” for free access, just visit the TimesMachine browser to enjoy samples, including “100 years ago today” with a new issue every day. The paper’s claim “All the news that’s fit to print” still appears in the left upper-hand corner of the print edition. Our picture shows the nice spin they put on the claim as posted on TimesMachine :-). “Who wants yesterday’s paper?” I do.
