mccain-vanityfairThis fake cover made fun of things Senator McCain is, whereas the famous New Yorker cover made fun of things Senator Obama is not. Oof. Ageism is the chauvinism of youth, and Senator McCain has had to defend himself (which he does with humor, see video below).  He’s funny, and yes, his age is funny, too. There’s a website dedicated to Things Younger than McCain. The way I see it, John McCain is not really old, but he certainly is old enough to be what we call an “elder statesman“. Known for wisdom, not new ideas. I’ll be happy to see Senator McCain anyplace but in the White House. Because age is not the real issue here. But come on, now, let’s have a few laughs:

Laughing with John McCain:

McCain said:

I’m older than dirt, I’ve got more scars than Frankenstein, but I’ve learned a few things along the way.

Presidential ambition is a disease that can only be cured by embalming fluid.

Never get into a wrestling match with a pig. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it. — To reporters in New Hampshire after being asked about Mitt Romney

  1. Dear Deetta,
    Thanks for visiting.
I also like McCain (though I wouldn’t vote for him since I don’t share his politics) and wrote up his impressive biography here: http://www.spotlight-online.de/language/grammar/meet-mccain-the-past-tense
He’s very real and civilized. But, you know, sometimes I wonder what the more enlightened Republicans see when they look out over the right wing Tea Party demonstrations, and what they are thinking when they block every move Obama makes. I know government is not like a corporation… though sometimes I think, especially in times like these where the problems are huge and the resources very limited, that politicians could try to be more like one, and collaborate constructively to bring about sensible results.
