Rod sent me this: “BTW — the gold Cadillac is beautiful and there are an amazing number of wonderfully restored US vintage cars around Munich. They show up at various shows from time to time. The blue T-Bird was on Theresienwiese last June along with hundreds of other wonderful pieces. Got a bit nostalgic.” Wow, gorgeous! What was the event?

  1. Glad you like the shot. I think the event was in conjunction with the “Frühlingsfest”. Like most Americans many of my memories from childhood are like yours with the Cadillac. Later it was traveling between North Dakota and California countless times. Honeymooning from Manitoba, Canada to Vancouver. Reading hour after hour to the kids in the car between Boise, Idaho and Reno. Moving from Montreal to California with a U-Haul trailer. I guess that’s where the American road movie genre comes from. None of that with a T-Bird, of course, but that’s where the dreams come in.

  2. Those are very long distances! How long did it take you to drive from North Dakota to California? Or from Boise to Reno? And moving your belongings all the way from Montreal to California – now that is a road trip.

When I was little and my four big brothers were still at home, we used to drive from Washington, DC to Drummond Island with the whole family (7 people) plus the dog and luggage for the whole summer. We would pile into the car between 2 and 4 am, zip up north almost without stopping to arrive in the middle of the night. Today the actual drive is shorter because new roads have been built, but it still takes my brothers about 15-16 hours.

Those trips… Once, before I was born, when my brothers were little, one of them left his teddy bear at one of the stops… No, dad didn’t go back. My brother is still sore at him about it.
