The students at the biotech company I teach at work veeeery hard, and I’m just translating a study on biotechnology and pharmaceuticals in Munich that is super interesting, so you’d think that’s what we’ll be discussing next lesson, right? Wrong. There was a request, you see, to compare the German and the English text of the Walt Disney classic, The Jungle Book. Some of the questions will be: Why did the writers change the text? How different is it in meaning? Can you translate the German text back into English? Rhythmic choral reading and a short dictation will be a part of the lesson, too. Looking forward to it! 1. Hi Anne,

Love this! Isn’t it interesting how students swing a left on us teachers every now and then. There we are, off to class, feeling all swish- got something they’re interested in me’bag and then wham! “Can we do the bare necessities?!” LOL

Oooooh, I reckon there’s no end to this lesson -you could also expand the conversation aspect, after the rhymthic choral reading etc, by sticking the words “bare necessities” up on the board and getting them to come up with a list of their essentials (or borrowing on the theme of your pretty blog – hey did you know we look like sisters-blogs ;-)), sorry distracted…

you could get them to make a list of essentials they’d need to survive on a deserted island, spiralling off into discussions about how to manage if the financial crisis turns into a major depression etc, etc.

p.s. downloaded the lyrics and off to go grab that video -it’ll be a super lesson to have when sun shining and need something funny.

  2. Hey Karenne,
you’re right, it’s just the thing for a sunny afternoon 🙂 Definitely good for an upbeat “island” talk.
    Your blog looks lovely BTW!
