I love paper. I was one of those kids who couldn’t get enough of scissors and crayons and folding things. Origami paper awakens my fingers and my inner child. My favorite school project was building a stage set from cardboard. I also love the paper. I love paper, or rather the paper, so much … that we have stopped subscribing to the paper edition of the Süddeutsche Zeitung and will read it online from now on. It’s for the planet. It doesn’t hurt the newspaper, the online subscription is not cheap, but it does save paper. And perhaps e-papers will help save the papers, too. So we’ll try it out for a while and see.

PS: Read Robert Lanham’s brilliant satire, Writing for Nonreaders in the Postprint Era (recommended by @jeffjarvis on twitter)

Here’s Natalie Cole to put paper in perspective:

Say, its only a paper moon
Sailing over a cardboard sea
But it wouldn’t be make-believe
If you believed in me

Yes, it’s only a canvas sky
Hanging over a muslin tree
But it wouldn’t be make-believe
If you believed in me

Without your love
It’s a honky-tonk parade
Without your love
It’s a melody played in a penny arcade

It’s a Barnum and Bailey world
Just as phony as it can be
But it wouldn’t be make-believe
If you believed in me

Grammar fans note the 2nd conditional! “It wouldn’t be make-believe (now and later!) if you believed in me!”
