On their recent EP, Fall Be Kind, Animal Collective move through peaceful spheres, lushly arranged, gorgeous. They traverse the sound universe, from chaos to rhythm and harmony and back. About three minutes into What would I want? sky! this song samples The Grateful Dead‘s beautiful “Unbroken Chain” (the words “willow sky” are the title phrase), quoting the 7/8 beat that showcases their ability to keep things complex, like the Dead. – No official video out yet. – Here are both songs side by side:

Animal Collective: What would I want? sky!

Good deeds.
Sky
What would I want? Sky

Is everything alright?
You feeling moany?
You feeling lonely?
You’re not the only
Is everything alright?
You feeling stormy?
You feeling phony?
You’re not the only

Do you get up up up?
Clouds stop and move above me
Too bad they can’t help me
What is the right way?
Do I float up up up?
When I stop and look around me,
Gray’s where that color should be,
What is the right way?

Old glasses clinking and a new order’s blinking
And I, I should be floating but I’m weighted by thinking
That I got on the river,
Really can’t make it change,
When the sky gets filled up too fast
And the taxi man’s saying, “You better
Give me some money,
Stop daydreaming, dude!”
When the point of horizon is hiding from you,
What would you want, sky?

What would I want? Sky

Is everything alright?
You feeling lonely?
You feeling moany?
You’re not the only
Is everything alright?
You feeling stormy?
You feeling phony?
You’re not the only

Do you get up up up?
Clouds stop and move above me
Too bad they can’t help me
What is the right way?
Do I float up up up?
When I stop and look around me,
Gray’s where that color should be,
What is the right way?

Old glasses clinking and a new order’s blinking
And I, I should be floating but I’m weighted by thinking
I’m a fly on the river,
Gotta make me some change,
When the sky gets filled up too fast
And the taxi cab’s waiting, you better
Give him some money,
Stop daydreaming, dude,
When the point of horizon is hiding its blues
What would you want, sky?

The Grateful Dead: Unbroken Chain

Blue light rain, well, unbroken chain,
Looking for familiar faces in an empty window pane.

Listening for the secret, searching for the sound
But I could only hear the preacher and the baying of his hounds.

Willow sky, well, I walk and wonder why,
They say love your brother, but you will catch it when you try.

Roll you down the line, boy, drop you for a loss,
Ride you out on a cold railroad and nail you to a cross.

November and more, as I wait for the score,
They’re telling me forgiveness is the key to every door.
A slow winter day, a night like forever,
Sink like a stone, float like a feather.

Lilac rain, unbroken chain, song of the sawhet owl.
Out on the mountain, it’ll drive you insane, listening to the winds howl

Unbroken chain of sorrow and pearls, unbroken chain of sky and sea.
Unbroken chain of the western wind, unbroken chain of you and me.
