Melissa Laveaux: Needle in the hay

Canadian songwriter Melissa Laveaux – her voice! her percussive guitar! – comes recommended by Julija on Aurgasm, the music blog. Here Laveaux sings a song by Elliott Smith, a gifted, deeply depressed songwriter addicted to drugs who killed himself in 2005, and she turns it into a song of sympathy and regret and farewell. The beautiful video follows the deceased into the underworld…

MELISSA LAVEAUX – Needle in the hay by No_format

Lyrics:
Your hand on his arm
Hay stack charm around your neck
Strung out and thin
Calling some friend trying to cash some check
He says you’re acting dumb
That’s what you’ve come to expect
Needle in the hay…

He’s wearing your clothes
From head down to toes he’s a reaction to you
You say you know what he did
But you idiot kid
You don’t have a clue
Sometimes they just get caught in the eye
You’re pulling him through
Needle in the hay…

Now on the bus
Nearly touching this dirty retreat
Falling out 6th and Powell a dead sweat in my teeth
Gonna walk walk walk
Four more blocks plus the one in my break
Down downstairs to the man
He’s gonna make it all ok
I can’t beat myself
I can’t beat myself
And I don’t want to talk
I’m taking the cure so I can be quiet
Whenever I want
So leave me alone
You ought to be proud that I’m getting good marks
Needle in the hay…

  1. Isn’t that weird – a while ago i bought a CD collection in the supermarket – mainly because i was bored but also because it wasin a nice blue box with the word COOL on the top.
It turned out not to be brilliant but there was one really good tune on it that i really like.
Turns out now i know where it comes from and who is singing it – thanks again for your role in my musical education!

  2. Ok, the box isn’t Blue – that was another one i bought (lounge) – and it’s called Cool Tributes, The Chill-Out Sessions.
    It’s 2 cds of covers.
And infact it’s not bad – it’s the Lounge which dissapointed.
Highlights include TokTokTok with “walk on the wild side” and Solal (featuring Melanie Cannon) with “Dancing Queen” .
I’ll try and send you some mp3s.
