In The World in Six Songs. How the Musical Brain Created Human Nature, Daniel J. Levitin lists six songs that inspired him in 1975 to become a musician. These are his “comfort” songs:

  1. Autobahn by Kraftwerk
  2. Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony as performed by Herbert von Karajan & the Berlin Philharmonic
  3. Revolver by the Beatles (whole album)
  4. Through my Sails by Neil Young, with CSNY
  5. The Great Gig in the Sky by Pink Floyd
  6. Night and Day as perfomed by Stan Getz

I’m not a musician, but my favorite six songs (oof, only six!) are:

  1. Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix as played by Stevie Ray Vaughan (ultimate guitar ballad)
  2. You Turn me on I’m a Radio by Joni Mitchell (best lyrics)
  3. Bach’s Matthäus Passion, Aria “Mache dich mein Herze rein” (responsibility)
  4. Godchild by Miles Davis (creative freedom)
  5. In the Garden (No Guru No Method No Teacher) by Van Morrison (mystic freedom)
  6. Like a Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan (young on the road)

Hi Dolcevita, Dolce, Helmut, Eamonn, dear reader, I’d be curious to know: What’s your mixed tape? Only six. OK? Here goes a “Stöckchen” 🙂

Thanks for the invite. Here goes:

The Rolling Stones: Street Fighting Man (testosterone, rebellion, rock ‘n roll)

Bob Dylan: A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall (the most surreal imagery)

Ike & Tina Turner: River Deep-Mountain High (the original and best wall of sound!)

Creedence Clearwater Revival: Bad Moon Rising (because we’ll always have (bad) weather)

Paul Brady: Arthur McBride (because we’ll always have conflict: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBGkhPx529g)

Darach Ó Catháin: An Sceilpin Draighneach (the high, lonesome sound of the unaccompanied voice)

  2. Liebe anne,

    Gruss,
    Helmut

  4. and here is my sixpack:

    * Mozart: Requiem (Wiener Philharmoniker, H.v.Karajan, 1987)
    * Paco de Lucia, Al di Meola, John McLaughlin: Friday Night in San Francisco. (1980)
    * George Benson: Summertime (concert @ carnegie hall 1975)
    * Deep Purple: child in time (Made in Japan 1972)
    * John Lee Hooker: The Healer (with Carlos Santana 1991)
    * Anne Hodgson Live with the e-piano: Country Roads (Munich, Perlacher street, 2007, unfortunately there’s no version in youtube or as CD available)

    😉

  7. It’s only a snapshot, but it seems ro be easy at the moment:
-“Four strong winds” sung by Jonny Cash “If you can read my mind” is a wonderful rendition in his aged, destoyed voice , too.
-“Lied der Erde”, Gustav Maler, sung by Fischer-Dieskau with Bernstein conducting
-Cara Dillon “Streets of Derry” (Extreemly authentic traditional interpretation)
-“Ton Thumb Blues” The Bob Dylan song done on “Dylanesque” by Brian Ferry . (Wonderfully superficial and diffident)
-Wagner, Wesendonck Lieder “Im Gewächshaus” done by Martha Mödl (extreme decadence and depression)
-” ’round midnight”(Thelonious Monk) in any version. Very cool by miles davis & john coltrane, very intense and quiet by chet baker

  8. Hi Bruderherz, the Johnny Cash song is beautiful. Didn’t someone else sing it originally? But he gives it real depth. Love, Anne
