When my nephew played “Creep” by Radiohead on accoustic guitar recently, I really listened up. “Creep” (1992) tells the story of an inebriated man who tries to get the attention of a woman he is attracted to by following her around. In the end, he lacks the self-confidence to face her. Bandleader Yorke said, “To actually assert yourself in a masculine way without looking like you’re in a hard-rock band is a very difficult thing to do.” – The bridge underlying “she’s running out the door” is taken from the Hollies’ rhapsodic “The Air that I breathe” (1974). Still brilliant:
Creep – by Radiohead
When you were here before,
Couldn’t look you in the eye
You’re just like an angel,
Your skin makes me cry
You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
I wish I was special
You’re so very special
But I’m a creep,
I’m a weirdo
What the hell am I doin’ here?
I don’t belong here
I don’t care if it hurts,
I wanna have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice
when I’m not around
You’re so very special
I wish I was special
But I’m a creep…
She’s running out the door
She’s running out
She run run run…
Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You’re so very special
I wish I was special
But I’m a creep…
Air That I Breathe – by The Hollies
If I could make a wish I think I’d pass
Can’t think of anything I need
No cigarettes, no sleep, no light, no sound
Nothing to eat no books to read
Making love with you has left me peaceful, warm inside
What more could I ask
There’s nothing left to be desired
Peace came upon me and it breathes in me
So sleep, silent angel, go to sleep
Sometimes all I need is the air that I breathe and to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe, yes to love you
Just to have you now
All I need is the air that I breathe, you’re all I want
